Why You Should Start Giving Yourself Head Massages

If your hair is going through a rough patch, or isn’t growing as fast as you’d like it to, don’t despair! The answer could be at your fingertips. Both regular body massage and scalp massage may contribute to healthy, glowing, faster-growing hair.
For centuries, Indian women have massaged their hair with oils to encourage long, shiny locks. I remember when I was younger I used to run away from my mom when she pulled the hair oil out of the cabinet. I used to hate it, but little did I know how good it was for my hair.
Like your skin, your hair goes through phases. Weather conditions, hair products, hormones, and your overall health can have a significant impact on its texture, appearance and growth. Now I can’t get enough, and I do this on weekly basis not only to my own hair, but also to that of my husband and my two-year-old daughter.
Massaging any part of the body increases blood flow, and can help with fatigue, stress, and headaches. This is especially true for scalp massages, because they don’t just benefit the skin and scalp, but also the hair follicles and hair. The increased blood flow can stimulate the follicles in such a way that hair will grow faster, which is a great benefit for those who wish to increase the length of their locks.
It’s important to note that only oils made specifically for the hair should be used for scalp massage. Here are essential oils will help nourish your scalp:
- Peppermint oil helps to improve circulation and acts as a natural cleanser.
- Tea tree oil helps soothe a dry, itchy scalp and clears it of minuscule dermatitis issues.
- Chamomile oil soothes an inflamed, itchy scalp.
- Lemon oil helps with the management of dandruff.
- Almond and castor oil help to promote hair growth.
After you’ve chosen your oils, get massaging! Follow this simple guide:
- Find a quiet spot, get comfortable and get ready to enjoy rubbing your scalp. Massage it by moving the pads of your fingers in a circular motion.
- Massage the oil into your scalp using fingertips dipped in the oil. Working your way from roots to ends, massage all the oil into your hair.
- With your fingers, locate the dimples in your skull, just behind the top of your ears. Apply pressure to the dimples for a few seconds, then release.
- Repeat the previous step a few times.
Due to the deep state of relaxation that it induces, it is also a good idea not to schedule any important work immediately after the massage.
The most common mistake is rubbing in a superficial way; in fact, the massage should be deep and slow, and should physically move the scalp in order to stimulate blood flow.
After you’ve massaged your scalp, you can either wash your hair immediately or leave the essential oils on for a couple of hours to penetrate and do their work. I used to leave the oil in overnight, then washed my hair in the morning — just have a towel on your pillowcase so you don’t ruin it. Not only by adding this routine you can get long, luscious, and healthy hair, but a nice relaxing felling as well.
