It's more than prenatal massage. It's a different kind of care.
Congratulations! You’re pregnant! And while excitement, joy and wonderment are some of the emotions you might be feeling, worry, fear and apprehension may also creep in. Is the extra weight gain taxing your joints? Is your new, awkward posture creating shoulder pain, neck pain and back pain?
Don’t worry. We understand. Pregnancy massage is therapeutic bodywork that focuses on the dramatic structural, physiological and psychological ways you are changed and challenged throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
While pregnancy massage is not intended to replace appropriate medical and prenatal care, it can enhance this special time and make it a more joyful experience by relieving some of the common discomforts of pregnancy, such as neck and shoulder pain and stress on the sacroiliac joints and hips.
Elm City Wellness’s licensed massage therapists use safe, nurturing and effective massage techniques that are tailored to your specific needs as they change through each trimester. Some of these techniques include long, rhythmic strokes and kneading to relax and tone the muscles. Joint movements and stretches increases range of motion, flexibility and relieve muscle cramping, fatigue and musculo-skeletal pain. Pregnancy massage also supports the work of the heart, increases cellular respiration and reduces edema (swelling).
One of the most gratifying reasons to experience this therapy is the emotional support and loving nurturance it provides throughout the childbearing year, especially to those who are dealing with feelings of fear, isolation and distress.
The massage itself will include techniques and treatments specific to pregnancy massage as well as those that may be applicable to anyone. In relationship to your term, body positioning will allow you to lie on your side or be in a reclining position. Our studio is fully equipped with a variety of prenatal pillows, wedges and cushions to offer as much comfort and support as possible.
Massage may be received in all stages of pregnancy, prenatal, labor and delivery, post-Caesarian recovery and postpartum.
